Saga Wayfinding and Names
Saga · prototype for review

Finding your way home, images that never look broken, and your name

Four changes to look at before they're built. Each section ends with the question I need answered. Everything here is live: drill through the phone, try usernames.

1 · Way home

Every route, and why you get lost today

The three tabs are the primary interaction points. Everything else is pushed on top, and the tab bar disappears there. Title → person → title → cast → person never ends, so after a few hops the only way back is one back tap per screen.

Proposed fix (three parts)

  • Tab bar on every screen. Pushed screens live inside the tab you started from. Tap that tab again and you jump straight to its top, the iOS convention.
  • No repeats in the history. Opening a title or person that's already in your path jumps back to it instead of stacking another copy, so the history can't grow without bound.
  • The logo is home on pushed screens: tap it to return to the tab's top.
Your call: take all three, or a subset? The tab-bar change is the biggest one: it moves the detail screens inside each tab.
2 · Images & fallbacks

No grey boxes, no broken images

  • Loading: a granite tile with the glass sheen sweeping at the brand angle, and the mark carving at its centre. The image then fades in over it in 200 ms.
  • No poster: one of our poster-wall cards, picked from the title's id so it's always the same one, with the title set in Familjen. A missing poster looks designed.
  • No photo of a person: a branded silhouette (head and shoulders in a darker tone, a sun behind them) in the same six palettes, again picked from the person's id.

These apply everywhere an image appears: posters, backdrops, cast, people, seasons and provider logos.

Your call: does the silhouette read as "a person in our world"? I can make it more literal or more abstract.

Loading

Sheen and a carving mark until the image arrives.

No poster

A brand card, chosen from the id.

No poster

Another id, another card.
3 · Cast grid & back button

Three across, and a plain back arrow

  • Cast grid: three per row on phones (was four). Faces get about 30% larger and names stop truncating. Tablets and desktop add columns from there.
  • Back button: just the chevron in a glass circle. The tab's glyph is gone; with the tab bar always visible, you already know which tab you're in.

A username for everyone, collected right after sign-in

Saga is the journey; you're the one on it. Everyone without a handle sees one of these before entering the app, including existing accounts. Names are unique, lowercase, 3–20 characters (letters, numbers, underscores, starting with a letter) and permanent: only support can change one. tmcallister92 is reserved for you.

Your call: pick A, B or C (or mix: say which parts).
A · Over the wallThe sign-in glass panel, continued. Familiar, calm.
B · Traveller's passYour name is written onto a pass as you type: the card you'll travel with.
C · One questionJust the question, big. The mark carves when the name is good.
