Saga for the Today Tab

Exploration · iPhone Duo · October 2026

A saga is a book. The new iPhone opens like one.

How Saga could be the most beautiful movie and TV app on iPhone Duo, Apple's first folding iPhone, and why that's our best shot at an App Store feature. Closed, the cover display is almost exactly the shape of a movie poster. Open, it's a two-page spread: the card on one page, its story on the other.

GitHub issue #347 (the system of record) Pre-orders Oct 16 · in stores Oct 23

Drawn to Apple's published dimensions (closed 84.1 × 117.8 mm, open 164.6 × 117.8 mm), both at the same scale. The side band's width is assumed.

The device: what's confirmed

Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. Everything below is from Apple unless it's marked otherwise. Checked October 7, 2026.

Why this gets Saga featured

Apple's editors love an app that shows off new hardware, and the Duo is the biggest change to the iPhone in years. Apple calls it "the most transformational change to iPhone since the original".

An open slot

Apple named three third-party apps adapting for launch: Netflix, Zoom and Slack. None is a discovery app, and no movie or TV app has won an Apple Design Award in 2025 or 2026.

A story in one sentence

"Saga turns iPhone Duo into a film almanac: the card on one page, its story on the other." Editors write Today stories; this one writes itself.

Built, not stretched

Apps built with the iOS 26 SDK run at "a familiar size" on the inner display, framed in black. Most apps will look like that for months, so being full-screen and designed for the spread stands out on day one.

What Apple's talks ask for

Two-column layouts, controls in the side band, nothing in the fold, landscape, Split View, the tabletop pose. Each one is a section below.

Timing

Saga isn't on the App Store yet. Launch day (Oct 23) is too soon: Apple wants nominations at least 3 weeks ahead. The realistic aim is an App Launch nomination for mid-November, pitched as built for iPhone Duo, while editors look for Duo apps for the holidays (our reading, not Apple's promise).

Proof we can show

Inner-display screenshots (App Store Connect takes 2007 × 2853 and 2853 × 2007), a preview video of the deal opening across the spread, and a TestFlight link in the nomination.

Saga on iPhone Duo, screen by screen

Closed is one-handed: the right thumb owns the band. Open is two-handed: each thumb gets a page. The hierarchy never changes between the two (Apple: "Don't limit functionality to one pose or another"). Titles and people are made-up examples.

Swipe

The card is still sacred: one poster, nothing on it. Open, the details that are one tap away on a phone are simply the right-hand page: trailer, where to watch, the cast with their ages, and Watchlist / Seen / Pass as buttons. Throw the card and the right page turns with it.

  • Not two cards side by side: one decision at a time is what makes the deck calm.
  • The card sits on the left page so the left thumb throws it; the right thumb has the buttons and the band.
  • Nothing interactive in the middle: the card's edge stops short of the fold.
Closed: the cover display is nearly poster-shaped (1 : 1.46 against 2 : 3), so the card is almost full-bleed.
Open: the card stays the poster alone; its story is the facing page.

Tonight

On a phone, Found it turns the page and takes the screen. On the Duo there's a second page already, so the pick stays in view on the left while Found it says where to watch it on the right. Done and Keep swiping, nothing else (owner, 2026-10-06).

Open: Found it opens as the right page instead of turning the whole screen.

The tabletop: movie night

Apple's guidance for this pose: media on top, controls "on a stable base at the bottom". For Saga, that's two people on a couch deciding: the trailer plays on the upper half, and Pass, Watchlist and Seen sit on the lower half.

  • Needs the hinge status (a small native module).
  • Same controls and hierarchy as the other poses, only arranged differently, as Apple asks.
Partly folded, on a table: the trailer above the fold, the throws below it.

Library

Open is a list and its detail: tap a poster on the left page and the right page shows it, with no navigation away. Four across on the left page, so the spread reads as an even grid, as Apple suggests for the fold. The owner's "3 across on phones" rule stays for the phone layout.

Closed: shelves and a grid, three across.
Open: the grid on the left, the selected title on the right.

Explore and Spotlight

Spotlight keeps its Apple-style results (owner, 2026-10-04). Open, the highlighted result previews on the right page as you move through the list, so people, films and places can be compared without going back and forth. Explore's grid becomes 6 across the spread (3 per page) with the filter bar on the left page.

Closed: one list of results, as today.
Open: results on the left, the person or title on the right.

A title page

The poster-palette glow runs under both pages. The left page holds the moment (the poster, Add to watchlist, the trailer); the right page scrolls the story: overview, the cast with ages, film lineage, where it was filmed. The cast wall becomes 6 across (3 per page) and still turns like dominoes.

Open: the poster and its glow on the left, the story on the right.

Friends and Me

The profile's motif (here Ochre's longship) carves in across the left page; time watched, genres and recent favorites sit on the right. Friends works the same way: the list on the left, a friend's profile on the right, so following someone back is one tap without losing your place.

Open: your profile on the left, your watching on the right.

The fold, the band and two thumbs

Three rules decide where things go on the open Duo.

Gilt: the fold, a "division region" when partly folded. Green: the system band. Ochre: thumb reach.
The fold

Nothing to tap in the middle

  • Cards, buttons and sheet edges stop short of the center. Scrolling content may cross it (Apple: "Scrollable content doesn't need to avoid this region").
  • Saga's own Sheet and Takeover are custom, so they won't get Apple's automatic fold avoidance. On the open Duo they dock into one page.
  • Grids use even column counts across the spread.
The band

Saga's tab bar goes to the side

  • Apple moves tab bars, toolbars and back buttons into the right-side band, but a tab bar drawn in JavaScript "stays exactly where you put it".
  • Proposed: AppTabBar becomes a vertical glass rail in the band, the lens gliding up and down, the Ansuz still carving on select (shown in every mockup here).
  • The alternative is the system tab bar (native tabs). That's question 2.
Two thumbs

Each thumb gets a page

  • Closed: everything you tap sits within the right thumb's reach; the band is right there.
  • Open: the card on the left page (left thumb throws), the actions on the right page and the band (right thumb).
  • Asymmetric safe areas: read each side's inset on its own, never "left × 2".

Folding and unfolding mid-swipe

Opening or closing the Duo resizes the app; it doesn't relaunch it (Apple: "your app will still resize when someone opens or closes their iPhone Duo"). The deck, the filters and the open sheet all stay. The rules:

  • A drag in progress settles back, never throws. A swipe only counts when you let go.
  • Opening: the card stays where it is and slides to the left page; the right page comes in from the fold, like a page lifting, in DURATION.slow with CHISEL. With Reduce Motion it fades.
  • Closing: the right page folds away and the card grows back to full-bleed. Where you were is never lost; an open details panel stays open on the phone layout.
  • Nothing re-fetches: same keyed list, same query cache.
Mid-drag, closed
It starts to open: the card settles
Open: its story lifts from the fold

Split View and landscape

On the inner display, someone can drag Saga to one half next to another app. Saga at half width uses its phone layout, with the rail on the outer edge (Apple moves controls to the left edge for the left app). Landscape must work too: the inner display ignores Saga's portrait lock, and Apple suggests landscape on the cover display for the tent pose.

Two Saga windows side by side (two decks, or a title next to Explore) is possible later; it needs multiple scenes, which React Native doesn't make easy. Not in the first version.

Split View: Saga's phone layout on the left half.

How we build it in Expo

Most of this is layout, which React Native can do from the window size and safe areas. The hard parts are the toolchain and the custom chrome.

The blocker first. To get the full display, the app has to be built with the iOS 27.1 SDK (Xcode 27.1). In Expo's September 15 post, EAS images with Xcode 27 were "coming soon", and Expo SDK 58, built for iOS 27, stays in beta until React Native 0.88 ships. Saga also runs on the react-native-tvos fork, which will need a matching release (not checked yet). Until then Saga runs on the Duo at "a familiar size", framed in black.

The ideas, ranked

Ranked by what an editor would notice on the Duo per unit of work. The first five together are "Saga, built for iPhone Duo".

1

Full-screen on the Duo

Build with the iOS 27.1 SDK (Expo SDK 58), lay out from the window size and per-side insets, and handle landscape. Without this, Saga sits in a black frame on the inner display.

2

The spread

A Spread primitive: two pages split at the fold. Swipe becomes card | story, Library and Spotlight list | detail, the title page moment | story.

3

The rail in the band

4

The poster-shaped cover

Closed, the card is nearly full-bleed: the cover display is 1 : 1.46, almost a 2:3 poster. Swipe's top row tightens so the poster gets every point.

The first three PRs

The order matters: nothing on the Duo looks right until the build reaches the edges.

PR 1 · native build

Full-screen on the Duo

  • Expo SDK 58 (once stable) and the matching react-native-tvos release, built with Xcode 27.1.
  • Per-side safe areas in Page, FloatingBar and AppTabBar; landscape on the cover display.
  • The rail in the band (or native tabs, per question 2).

Proof: gates, then Device Hub open, closed, rotated, folded and in Split View; the owner on a real Duo.

PR 2 · JS only

The spread, on Swipe

  • The Spread primitive (iOS, regular width).
  • Swipe: card | story; Tonight: card | Found it.
  • Fold and unfold mid-swipe: settle, lift, keep state.
  • Sheet and Takeover dock into a page.

Proof: Device Hub; web and Android unchanged (pnpm e2e green).

PR 3 · JS only

The spread everywhere else

  • Library and Spotlight: list | detail.
  • Title pages: moment | story; the cast wall 6 across.
  • Friends and Me.
  • Inner and outer screenshots for App Store Connect.

Then: the hinge module and movie night; the nomination.

Still true on every iPhone

From the first version of this exploration, now supporting ideas. They make the Duo work look finished.

Glass in its place

Native Liquid Glass for chrome only; content cards keep the frosted recipe; sheets tinted like web (fixes #332's see-through sheets); Reduce Transparency means solid granite. On the Duo the rail and band are the chrome.

Swipe for everyone

VoiceOver actions on the card (today the deck can't be used with VoiceOver on a phone), and large text that reflows. The Duo's right page makes the buttons visible anyway.

A Liquid Glass icon

The Ansuz as a layer in Icon Composer, with designed Dark, Clear and Tinted looks.

Posters you can hold

Native previews and menus on long-press; the poster zooming into its title page (Expo Router, iOS, alpha).

Widgets and StandBy

Tonight and Coming soon widgets (expo-widgets). On the Duo, StandBy works on either display without charging: a poster on the nightstand.

The carve, felt

A Core Haptics carve on iOS behind lib/haptics; Android keeps today's taps.

Questions for the owner

Also on the GitHub issue as checkboxes.

A Duo to test on. It's $1,999 and in stores October 23. Device Hub covers layout, but the feel of folding mid-swipe needs the real thing. Buy one?

The tab bar. Saga's carved bar as a vertical rail in the band (recommended), or the system tab bar via native tabs, which moves itself but drops the carving?

Swipe open. The card on the left and its story on the right (recommended), or two cards side by side?

Launch timing. Hold the App Store launch until Saga is full-screen on the Duo and nominate for mid-November, or launch now and nominate an App Enhancement later?

SDK 58. Upgrade as soon as it's stable (it depends on React Native 0.88 and a react-native-tvos release), or try building SDK 57 with Xcode 27.1 first?

Movie night. The tabletop pose needs a small native hinge module. In for the first Duo release, or later?

Grids. Four across per page in Library and 3 per page (6 across the spread) on the cast wall: OK, given "3 across on phones"?
